Grant Vassberg grew up on Kallion Farms, where he was surrounded by the latest in data collection and breeding technologies. Despite utilizing advanced methods such as DNA technology, embryo transfer (ET) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) services, and feed conversion analysis, the operation often failed to reward the most productive and resilient females.

As a hands-on manager of Kallion Farms, Grant observed which females consistently produced calves annually and maintained their body condition without extra feeding. This practical knowledge led to a shift in focus at Kallion Farms, where only 33 of the orginal 900 survived his program focused on fertility, docility, and overall robustness.

His travels across seven countries in recent years have expanded his view on cattle genetics. In the countries of Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Honduras, he identified significant fertility challenges and noted the benefits of sustainable genetics over high-performance show traits. These experiences highlighted the need for a cooperative approach to drive global change in cattle operations. Alone, his vision of genetic transformation might seem far-fetched, but a cooperative network of breeders with similar genetics, especially those native to the regions needing improvement, makes this vision more feasible and credible.

As a co-founder of Bos Sires, Grant is dedicated to promoting cattle that align with nature’s principles, focusing on transparency, historical breeding knowledge, and collaboration with breeders of sustainable genetics.

“Cattle breeding is a relatively simple endeavor. The only difficult part is to keep it simple.” - Tom Lasater
