John Atkinson, co-founder of Bos Sires, grew up learning essential cattleman skills from his father and grandfather. Raised on the principles of renowned cattlemen such as Jon Bonsma and Tom Lasater, John was instilled with a deep understanding of sustainable and productive cattle breeding. His family specializes in breeding Droughtmasters, a breed known for its resilience and adaptability.

During his university years, John observed a troubling disconnect in contemporary cattle breeding practices. He realized that many breeders don’t know what real functional productivity even looks like. This insight was further reinforced after he graduated and undertook an internship in the United States with a famous show breeder. There, he witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of breeding practices focused on aesthetics rather than real-world performance.

John's international travels have broadened his perspective and strengthened his commitment to sustainable cattle genetics. He has seen the global challenges faced by cattle breeders and has been advocating for breeding practices that emphasize fertility, adaptability, and low input requirements.

Understanding the limitations of individual efforts, John helped to co-found Bos Sires to create a more significant impact. He believes that by uniting breeders who share a commitment to sustainable principles, Bos Sires can drive meaningful change in the industry.
